Star anise

It contains a brown and shiny seed with anise and liquorice taste, with a slightly peppery flavor.

It is the pod that is the most fragrant.

It is mainly used in baking, to flavor a cream or compote for example.

Star anise is also used in Chinese cuisine to season a vegetable wok or a dish of fried noodles.
